Hello there,
What is the first thing you remember? Think back as far as you can, and capture that memory. Is it a vivid memory or is it hazy? Now I want you to think back to last Tuesday. What did you have for dinner? Can you remember? How about what you were doing at 2 in the afternoon? Chances are unless something important was happening at these moments you are not going to remember the specifics. You know that you ate but probably not the exact food, and you have a better chance at remembering what you were doing, but only because it was an action that you performed.
Our brains are the library that stores all of our memory. Everything that we have ever done or seen is stored inside ready to be called upon at a moment's notice. But sometimes we just can't remember. This is because often our short term memory doesn't get filed in our conscious long term memory. So while our brains will have the information it is not accessible. This is because that specific information set was not important to us at the time, so our brains file it away as such.
While this may be ok for the mundane aspects of our life such as what you ate last Tuesday for dinner, it becomes a problem when we start to forget things that actually are important. Such as dates, names, appointments ect. They can affect our lives in ways that are unimaginable. Often this happens as a person ages but it is not limited to. Many people have a hard time remembering names and or phone numbers. These are common things to forget and are also some of the easiest to remember once you train your brain to file them away as important.
Now I am not going to go into the specific science of how your brain converts your short term memory into long term memory as knowing this information will in no way help you improve your memory, but I will give a basic background so you do have something to follow later on.
Your memory is divided into two parts, short term memory and long term memory. Your short term memory usually only lasts around 12-15 seconds, though this depends on the person. Your short term memory also can usually only hold 7 pieces of data, which is why you can remember a phone number from the phone book to type it in the phone, but need your credit card when you order your wife flowers and the clerk reads it back to you.
Long term memory is information that your brain processes from this short term memory and as the name suggests, stores it for use later. For Information to be saved from the short term memory to the long term memory there are a number of things that need to happen. Your brain needs to know that the information is important enough to save and this happens in many different ways. You can actually use these ways to force your brain to store more information when you want it.
